My Project

To develop a system to display the elements of the periodic table in a more physically accurate way; taking into account the actual positions of electrons in space ('orbitals').

 

Explanation

The A.E.S. diagram is read in an outwards clockwise spiral from the centre (the nucleus); the electrons accumulate as you read the diagram, the element changes, and is written in each electron. For example, reading the diagram in an outwards clockwise spiral from the centre, the 10th electron reads (Ne), as Neon has 10 electrons and 10 as its atomic number. The coloured rings represent the sub-shells of the orbitals in which the electrons reside. 3D representations of the orbitals are shown alongside their corresponding electron count (on the diagrams) on this page. Each sub-shell and energy state is labelled on the diagram. For example: the electrons within the 2px shell reside along the x axis at a 2nd 'p' orbital; the electrons within the 3dyz shell reside between the y and z axis at the 3rd 'd' orbital, etc.
